Zara Larsson is a Swedish singer and songwriter who rose to fame in Sweden at just ten years old. Entered into Sweden’s Talent show Taleng in 2008 by her mother, Zara Larsson went on to win the competition with her rendition of My Heart Will Go On by Céline Dion in the show’s final. Since Zara Larsson’s early success, her evolution as an artist is an exhibit of adaptability and flexibility in an industry that is demanding and ever-changing. There is a lot to learn from Zara Larsson’s unashamed resilience in discovering her voice, and her unwavering integrity to her beliefs and principles.
Making an International Breakthrough
Zara Larsson knew she wanted to be an entertainer and performer from a very young age. She evolved through dance training at the Royal Swedish Ballet School as a young child, as well as taking home a talent show crown at just ten years old.
From the very beginning, Larsson has been confident and fearless in the challenge of establishing herself and constantly evolving with emerging trends throughout her career.
And establishing herself internationally was not an instant result of her victory. It was only four years after the Taleng that Larsson was eventually signed. Speaking to the Guardian on the time that passed between her monumental achievement and her signing in 2012, Larsson said: ‘I found that very stressful, and worried my career might be over. I went back to normality.’
So, when she signed with TEN music group in 2012, being thrust into the spotlight once again was an adjustment, but one that Larsson had anticipated, and craved. She released her debut EP Introducing in 2013, with the first song from the album Uncover winning an award on YouTube and achieving platinum status in both Sweden and Norway. Larsson was also awarded with the Rockbjörnen award twice in 2013 for ‘Breakthrough of the Year’ and ‘Live Artist of the Year’.
Already a household name in her home country, Larsson was fixated on her evolution to international stardom. And it was 2015 that beckoned her rise to international fame with the singles Lush Life and Never Forget You. Lush Life topped Sweden’s charts and dominated the Top Five in many other countries, including the United Kingdom. Never Forget You (a collaboration with British singer, songwriter and record producer, MNEK) was another breakthrough success, peaking at Number Five on the UK Singles Chart and earning a place in the US Billboard Hot 100.
These tracks represent the beginning of the legacy Zara Larsson has created and continued to evolve ten years later.
A Quiet Evolution
Having now established her voice on a global level, Larsson was ready to evolve into an icon. The success of the tracks Lush Life and Never Forget You propelled an 18-year-old Zara Larsson to new heights and by 2017, she was releasing her first international debut album.
So Good was her global introduction and was a massive hit across the world. It peaked at number 7 on the UK Albums Chart and hit the top 10 in many other countries, like Sweden and Australia.
Featured on the album were hot tracks like Ain’t My Fault and her popular collaboration with Clean Bandit Symphony.
The album was a smash hit and helped to portray to the world an image of fearlessness and ferocity, a symbol of her evolution for a child prodigy to a global phenomenon. This was a transformation on her terms.
Her second international album Poster Girl in 2021 saw a further evolution of her sound, leaning into disco and electro-pop. Its release came after four years since her first album and the pressure to deliver was immense, with sounds of the industry constantly developing.
Speaking on So Good’s release, Larsson confessed: “It’s easy to say this now, because at the time I wasn’t ready and I didn’t feel like it was good enough.”
But Poster Girl was a project that allowed Larsson to tune into herself and have full creative freedom over her work. It was in the Top 10 most-streamed female albums of 2017 and, to this day, takes the 23rd spot in the list.
Zara Larsson’s Revival
Then came an era of independence and reinvention. Perhaps not the final stage of her evolution, but an important and defining one.
In 2022, Larsson acquired the rights to her songs and established her own record label, Sommer House, which released its first album Venus in 2024. Larsson had been offered the opportunity to buy the rights to her recordings when her Swedish label, TEN music group, decided to shut up shop.
After witnessing the debacle of Taylor Swift’s record label collapse, the head of Larsson’s long-time label, Ola Håkansson, was dedicated to allowing Larsson control of her art.
Back in 2019, when Swift’s label was put up for sale, she was never approached about the opportunity to take ownership of her master recordings.
Taking an empowered stand, she defiantly re-recorded her songs from scratch, dubbing them ‘Taylor’s Version. Fans supported the re-recorded versions, devaluing the originals and regaining control over songs that defined her career.
Now one of the most talked about artists in the world, Larsson’s 2025 album Midnight Sun dominated charts. She became the first artists ever to land two initial No 1’s in consecutive weeks on the US Billboard’s US Pop Airplay Chart, with Midnight Sun and Stateside featuring Pink Pantheress.
What was particularly powerful about her comeback was a rebrand that felt authentic and natural. Inspired by a viral dolphin meme that consisted of emotional confessions culminated with her hit song ‘Symphony’ and an ironic colourful and sparkling dolphin, Larsson embraced the concept.
She adopted a saturated, neon summer aesthetic, using imagery like butterflies, sunsets and beaches. Her welcoming of the aesthetic encompasses the artist’s passion and drive to develop.
Zara Larsson is a breath of fresh air to the world of music. She has shown that evolution should not change you, scare you, or stop you. Your evolution journey should guide you, lead you, and elevate you.
