An Exclusive Interview with Tommy Cannon: Reflections on Comedy and Life
Early Days of Cannon and Ball
What was it like in the early days, trying to get your big break as a comedian? Have you had any tough times? How did you overcome them?
It was pretty tough, actually. Working men’s clubs were always challenging, and we often got paid off at multiple venues. But we just worked our way to the top, overcoming these obstacles together and never giving up.
Upbringing and Life Lessons
What was your upbringing like?
My upbringing wasn’t the best. As a child, you couldn’t talk back to your parents without facing consequences. I rarely saw my dad and grew up with a stepdad and step-siblings who moved in. My mum would send me out to play, and when the gas man came to light the gas lamps in the street, it was time to come inside.
What life lessons have you learned?
Growing older has taught me to be more considerate of those less fortunate. I’ve learned to give more and take less.

Relationship with Bobby Ball
How did the personal struggles and conflicts between you and Bobby Ball impact your performances on stage and your relationship offstage?
Not at all. People often said we fell out, but those were just rumors. We never parted ways; we were always there for each other. We shared nearly 60 years together, and I lost him four years ago, bless him.
What’s been the hardest part of life for you?
The hardest part was our struggle to the top. We faced many setbacks, especially being paid off at working men’s clubs. It was a tough journey, but we persevered until we finally got our lucky break.
Reflections and Future Plans
If you could go back and change anything, would you? Why?
Honestly, I wouldn’t change much about my past. I might wish for a bit more love from my parents as a child because it was a tough upbringing. However, I believe everything happens for a reason.
Tommy Cannon is with his wife, Hazel.
Do you have a secret you can tell us?
I don’t usually keep secrets, but I can share that I’ll be releasing an autobiography later this year and filming a documentary about the lives of Cannon and Ball from my perspective. It’s all in production now.
What’s your biggest regret?
I don’t have any regrets. I believe that everything in life shapes who you are today.
What do you have planned for the future?
I have a lot planned! I’ll be touring the UK from October, performing at Warner Hotels—places where Bob and I used to perform. I’ll also be working on my autobiography and documentary. Staying busy is essential!
Quick Fire Round
What would be your superpower?
To be able to fly.
How do you like to spend your free time?
With my gorgeous family.
What’s the funniest thing that’s ever happened to you?
Looking in the mirror!

Chocolate.
What are you most proud of achieving?
My magnificent family.
If you could wish for anything in the world, what would it be and why?
I wish I were younger so I could spend more time with my family.
What’s your biggest ick?
Cocky people who think they’re the best at what they do.
What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
The best advice came from Bobby. We reassured each other constantly—it was like a marriage. Someone also told me recently that I was just as much a part of Cannon and Ball as Bobby was.
What couldn’t you live without: your red braces or your picture of you and Robbie Williams cuddling?
I’d say my picture with Robbie Williams; it’s a cherished item!
Snog, Marry, or Hide: Jo Brand, Sue Perkins, Katie Hopkins?
Hide from Katie Hopkins, marry Jo Brand—she’s hilarious—and snog Sue Perkins because hopefully, we’d both laugh it off!
Tommy would hide from Katie Hopkins, but we’ve got to say we love her!
