Star Trek’s Marina Sirtis took time to open up about her childhood—her courage later inspired fans to face their own struggles

Marina Sirtis & Patrick Stewart Star Trek:

Marina Sirtis, an actress known for her roles in several films, is best recognised for her portrayal of Deanna Troi in the Star Trek franchise and is a personable and popular figure among fans. However, nobody knew about her dark past until she opened up about her experience years later. Though the move must have been tough, her confidence and courage became an inspiration to fans worldwide.

Main Lesson:

  • Opening up about traumatic events you experienced in the past demonstrates significant strength, no matter how long it takes you to do so
  • Nobody should suffer childhood trauma alone. It’s essential to discuss your concerns with someone before they escalate into something more serious.

Sirtis: The Childhood Years

Vanishing inside the minds of a character is a significant part of any acting career, and this is no exception for Star Trek actress Marina Sirtis. However, this skill not only aided her professional life, but also her personal life.

Sirtis, best known for her role as Lieutenant Commander/Counselor Deanna Troi in the Star Trek franchise, admitted a few years ago that she was ‘sexually molested when [she] was three.’ Her mother used to leave her with a babysitter; unfortunately, the sons of said babysitter molested Sirtis. Despite the severity of the incident, Sirtis never told anyone, including her mother, about what had happened. She felt ashamed and at fault, even at that young age, and was concerned that the knowledge would kill her mother.

Unfortunately, her history was also marked by poverty. She began working at the tender age of eleven because she needed her own money to afford things that many parents could buy for their children, such as tights and sweets.

Though Sirtis was able to overcome her childhood trauma, she was hit by another tragedy in 2019, when her husband, Michael Lamper, died at the age of 61. Sirtis, understandably, went silent on social media and flew under the radar for quite some time after the tragic event.

Consequence and Recovery

As a consequence of her molestation, Sirtis suffered from an eating disorder that stretched over twenty years. Though apparently a relatively common response to being molested, it was still detrimental. Eventually, Sirtis left England; this turned out to be one of the best decisions she made, since she didn’t believe she’d receive any therapy if she had stayed in England. The therapy helped, especially since many people in the group had been sexually assaulted at one point or another. This allowed Sirtis to resonate and bond with them.

Watching TV and immersing herself in characters was another way Sirtis helped herself through her childhood struggles. The invented world offered by TV functioned as a coping mechanism for Sirtis during her childhood. ‘As a child, TV was my escape,’ Sirtis has admitted. ‘I didn’t want to be me, I wanted to be somebody else.’ Being able to escape inside the TV, so to speak, allowed Sirtis to embody these fictional characters who didn’t have her traumatic history.

Star Trek and Strength

Sirtis’s experiences were paralleled in a specific episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation called Violations. In this episode, Sirtis/Counselor Troi is assaulted by a form of telepathic rape. That Sirtis had to act through what must have been a brutal reminder of her lived experiences is a testament to the strength of her character.

Despite having had an eating disorder in the past, Sirtis is also determined not to fall back on her harmful habits. When asked how she remains in great shape, she has emphasised her exercise routine; equally, she has also emphasised her refusal to diet after having had an eating disorder years earlier.

Although the death of her husband prompted Sirtis to retire from public life for a while, she made a comeback in 2019 with her appearance on Dark Sublime and in 2020 as Troi in Star Trek: Picard. Much of her support has been attributed to former castmates from Star Trek, whom Sirtis praised for being strong supporters after her husband’s death. This, coupled with Sirtis finding the courage to open up about her childhood experiences, has inspired many fans to confront their own past and seek the support they need to lead healthier lives.
