Rick Allen: The Power of Adaptation

Latest

Rick Allen, drummer of Def Leppard, overcame a life-changing accident to return to the stage, inspiring millions with his resilience and powerful comeback.

Rick Allen, drummer for the illustrious Def Leppard, started his career early when he became the band’s drummer at fifteen. As Def Leppard steadily rose to prominence and popularity, things looked positive for Allen and his bandmates by 1984. However, at the end of the year, a near-death incident would alter Allen’s personal and professional life forever.

December 1984: The Rick Allen Accident

On 31st December 1984, Rick Allen was driving his Corvette down the A57 when another car sped around the corner and overtook him on the bridge before slowing down. However, each time Rick Allen tried to overtake, the car in front accelerated. Eventually, Rick Allen lost his temper and accelerated to overtake, not realising there was a sharp turn directly ahead.
The result was a badly broken right arm and a severed left arm. The Rick Allen accident would become one of the most well-known moments in rock history.

The Immediate Aftermath

Rick Allen was initially given false hope when surgeons tried to reattach his arm; unfortunately, the arm soon had to be amputated due to an infection. With no left arm and facing the possibility of losing his right arm as well, Rick Allen’s future as a drummer seemed bleak. Doctors frequently told him his chances of drumming in the future were remote; Rick Allen himself had begun to believe that he’d never be able to drum again. Robbed of his arm and his livelihood, Rick Allen experienced the darkest time in his life. ‘…at the beginning…I felt like I really couldn’t do this anymore,’ he later admitted.

However, things changed after a visit from record producer Mutt Lange. With Mutt’s help, Rick Allen began to realise that he could reclaim his drumming career with the help of resilience and modern technology. A custom drum set with four foot pedals was created to accommodate his new technique: drumming with his left foot instead of his arm.

Rick Allen’s Comeback with Def Leppard

After spending six weeks in hospital, Rick Allen spent some time at his parents’ house. Aware that it would be tough to get into a position where he could confidently rejoin Def Leppard, Rick Allen locked himself in a room and played the drums as much as he could. Faced with the struggle of adjusting to his new and unique technique, there were times when Rick Allen thought it was impossible and considered giving up. However, he persisted, and eventually, his efforts would pay off.

Once able, Rick Allen flew out to the Netherlands to join Def Leppard in recording their new studio album. The following three weeks were spent alone in a studio room, practising relentlessly on his new drum kit. By the next live performance of Def Leppard, just twenty months later, Rick Allen was ready. After having played on his own without a backup drummer for two-and-a-half warm-up gigs, Rick Allen then joined Def Leppard for the 1986 Monsters of Rock performance, which was a major success.

Resilience Beyond the Stage

Though Rick Allen has faced a few additional challenges in the aftermath of his accident, such as PTSD and self-medicating, he overcame these by founding the Raven Drum Foundation, which focuses on inspiring trauma victims through drumming classes. Through this charity, Rick Allen has shared his story with teenage cancer patients, domestic abuse victims and war veterans, turning his personal tragedy into a powerful story of survival and hope.

During Rick Allen’s journey, the most important thing was being given time to learn and adjust to his new technique. His Def Leppard bandmates, far from turning their backs on him, gave him the time he needed. Thanks to their support, Rick Allen focused his efforts on what he could do rather than what he couldn’t. It instilled in him a sense of determination to relearn his craft and prove the doctors wrong.

Now, 47 years later, Rick Allen is one of the longest-running members of Def Leppard – proving that resilience isn’t just about recovery, but also reinvention and innovation.

Rick Allen continues to inspire people worldwide. The Rick Allen accident was tragic, but it also became the catalyst for an extraordinary comeback.
