How did you decide to get into acting?
My whole life, I wanted to be an actor. When I turned 13, I felt like time was running out for me to make my mark. That pressure lit a fire under me, and I got serious about pursuing my dreams. I was lucky enough to catch the attention of Michael J. Fox’s original Vancouver agent, who saw something in me. She believed in my passion, and 45 years later, I’m still grateful for her support.
How did you land your first big break?
After finishing a 12-week “Learn to Act” course, I booked my first gig just three weeks later as Santa’s lead elf at a mall Christmas display. That role kicked off my career, and later, I got to play an elf in Elf with Will Ferrell (although my scene was cut). The experience solidified my love for acting and confirmed that more exciting roles were ahead.

What was it like voicing Raphael in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?
Playing Raphael in the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles was a dream come true. It’s amazing how the show has become such a huge part of so many childhoods. Voicing a character like Raphael, who’s strong, sarcastic, and fearless, allowed me to tap into a whole new side of myself. Plus, it introduced me to a fanbase that has been incredibly supportive throughout my career.
What challenges have you faced during your acting journey?
Like many actors, I’ve had my share of struggles. One of the hardest periods in my life was dealing with the loss of my sister to suicide when she was 21. Around that time, I was working on a movie-of-the-week project where my character was grappling with guilt and tragedy, which echoed my own grief. It was emotionally draining, but it also felt like a way to honor her memory. That role was later considered for a TV Emmy, and I believe that was a sign of support from above.

How has your career impacted your personal life?
Balancing a career in entertainment with personal life can be tough. I’ve learned that believing in yourself and surrounding yourself with positive influences is key. If I could go back, I’d say “yes” to more opportunities and walk away from negative situations earlier. I’ve also learned that, more than anything, happiness comes from staying true to yourself.
What are your biggest career regrets?
I regret not believing in myself enough to pursue some of the personal milestones I dreamed of, like owning my own home and starting a family. But I still hold onto the hope that I can leave a legacy that helps others achieve these dreams, even if I didn’t.

What’s next for you, Matt?
I’m excited about the future! I’ll be making an appearance at a convention in Shrewsbury, England, on October 2024, followed by a comic book store signing. After a 15-year break from TV and film roles, I’m diving back in with both comedy and drama classes. I can’t wait to see what the next chapter brings—and who knows, maybe there’s an “Elf revisited” role in my future!
